15일 법조계에 따르면 서울중앙지법 형사합의25-2부(부장판사 박정제·박사랑·박정길)는 특수강도, 인질강도 방조 혐의로 기소된 A(41)씨에게 지난 2일 징역 3년을 선고했다.
A씨는 필리핀에서 운영되는 불법 스포츠토토 사이트 운영사의 직원으로, 운영자 B씨가 사이트를 타인에게 처분하려던 사실을 알게 되자 2019년 2월 다른 직원들과 함께 B씨를 납치하고 B씨의 배우자 C씨를 협박한 혐의로 재판에 넘겨졌다.

그 반대편에 인생을 도박에 탕진하는 사람들이 있다. 개인이 감당 못하자 회삿돈을 횡령한 경우가 드물지 않다. “돈을 잃으니 오기가 생깁디다. 하루종일 다음 경기 베팅 생각밖에 안 합니다.” 대부분 소소한 금액으로 시작했다가 서서히 중독의 수렁에 빠져들고 끝내 헤어나지 못하겠더라는 호소다. 2018년 19세 이상 국민 4300여만 명 중 150여만 명이 불법 스포츠 도박을 경험했다는 사행산업통합감독위 보고서가 있다. 지금 이 순간에도 온라인 커뮤니티는 도박에 일상을 저당 잡힌 사람들의 욕망으로 어지럽다. 국내 사행산업의 지각변동을 가져온 건 역시 코로나19였다. 그 여파로 합법적 사행산업은 고사 위기, 반면 불법 스포츠 도박 시장은 거침없는 확산 추세다. 이 불균형의 폐해를 어떻게 해소할 것인가가 관건이다.
